Shoe Fitting Guidelines

For better shoe fit, try following these simple guidelines:

  • Have your feet measured regularly, even as an adult.
  • Choose shoes that conform to your foot shape.
  • Shop later in the day when your feet are their largest.
  • Make sure there is adequate space (3/8" to 1/2") for your longest toe.
  • Only purchase shoes that fit comfortably -- neither too tight nor too loose.

If you continue to have difficulty finding shoes that fit, you might need the help of a certified pedorthist. At Foot&AnkleONE, we provide on-site pedorthist services for added convenience.

What to look for

Shoes protect our feet and prevent injury. To do so, they must fit properly. Poorly fitting shoes can cause bunions, corns, hammer toes and many other foot problems. You can prevent some foot problems by understanding the components of good shoe fit and selecting the right shoes for you.

Shoe Construction

Shoe Construction
  • Leather is best because it breathes well and molds to your foot.
  • Soles should be strong, flexible and cushioning with a good gripping surface.
  • Insoles should be well cushioned to absorb the impact of walking on hard
  • surfaces.
  • Good arch supports distribute weight bearing of the foot over a greater surface.
  • High heels can change body posture, cause backaches and shift weight bearing to the forefoot and cramp the toes.
  • A strong heel counter keeps the foot in position inside the shoe.

Correct Fit

  • Sizes vary among shoe brands and styles. Do not select a shoe by the size, but rather judge it by how it fits on your foot.
  • Because feet get wider (spread) and possibly longer with age, you should have both feet measured every time you buy shoes.
  • Go shoe shopping in the late afternoon when feet are swollen to their largest.
  • Both feet may not be the same size. Always buy shoes for the biggest foot.
  • Shoes will not stretch with wear and they will not feel better after you break them in. They should feel comfortable the day you buy them.
  • The toe box should allow you to wiggle your toes. It should be 3/4 inch beyond the tip of your longest toe when standing.
  • Only you know if a shoe fits. If they are not comfortable, don't buy them.
  • If you cannot find properly fitting shoes, consult your doctor or a certified pedorthist.
