Introduction
When you're an athlete, you rely on healthy bones, joints,
muscles and ligaments to stay active. That's why
so many athletes rely on SportONE.
A division of Orthopaedics Northeast (ONE), SportONE is
the area's first and most comprehensive sports medicine
program. Started in 1990, SportONE provides diagnostic,
treatment and rehabilitation services to area high schools,
colleges, amateur athletic teams, professional sports
teams and recreational athletes of all ages.
Our fellowship-trained sports medicine physicians, certified
athletic trainers and physical therapists are experienced
in all types of sports and recreation injuries, including:
- Ligament sprains and tears
- Cartilage injuries
- Joint instability or swelling
- Overuse injuries
- Muscle weakness
Depending on the nature of your injury, your treatment could involve
anything from exercise and physical therapy, to open
or arthroscopic surgery,
including anterior cruciate
ligament reconstruction.
If surgery is required, SportONE is affiliated with Fort
Wayne and other area hospitals. For outpatient surgery,
Orthopaedics Northeast has its own ambulatory surgery
center, SurgeryONE, right on site for added convenience.
In addition, physicians from Orthopaedics Northeast's
other specialties are always available, including Foot&AnkleONE,
HandONE, JointONE and SpineONE for the ultimate in specialty
care.
At SportONE, our primary goals are to promote safe athletic
practices and help injured athletes return to action
as soon as possible. One way we do this is through our
ongoing involvement with area high schools and other
athletic teams.
Whether you're a high school athlete, a member of a pro team
or someone who's just trying to stay in shape, see
the sports specialists at SportONE. If you want to stay
in the game, it helps to have the finest sports medicine
team in northeast Indiana on your side.
Our team is on your team
From its beginning, SportONE has been dedicated to providing
high school athletes in northeast Indiana with a comprehensive
sports medicine program.
Each week, trainers from SportONE visit over 30 area high
schools free of charge to provide injury prevention
training, injury evaluation and medical coverage for
various athletic events. We also hold Saturday morning
clinics between August and October to evaluate high
school sports injuries. And to help raise money for
area high school athletic programs, we sponsor the James
E. Albright Memorial Golf Outing, an annual event honoring
our late colleague and sports enthusiast.
At SportONE, we know that young athletes are not just smaller
versions of adults. Because their bodies are growing,
they often require special care and training. Through
our outreach programs, we hope to encourage a safe competitive
environment for all high school athletes through proper
conditioning, prompt treatment of injuries and appropriate
rehabilitation programs.
What if your body's telling you you're not a kid anymore?
More and more people are exercising on a daily basis. Athletes
of all ages are participating in more strenuous activities
such as skiing, mountain biking and in-line skating.
But sooner or later, we all have to accept the fact
that a twist or stretch that used to be routine can
now easily cause an injury.
At SportONE, we believe the health benefits gained from
regular exercise are immeasurable, and we recognize
that many people would rather learn to manage and overcome
their injuries than give up their daily workouts or
weekend sports.
That's why we offer the best possible program to help you return
to your normal activities.

What exactly is arthroscopy?
You may have heard of arthroscopic surgery because of the
many high-profile athletes who've undergone the procedure
in recent years. What you may not realize is how innovative
this technique is or the fact that it's readily available
on an outpatient basis through SportONE.
Literally meaning "To look within the joint," arthroscopy
was first developed as a diagnostic tool. To perform
the technique, an orthopaedic surgeon makes a small
incision in the patient's skin and then inserts a
pencil-sized instrument containing a small camera that
magnifies and illuminates the structures inside the
joint. With the joint displayed on a monitor, the surgeon
can look for any damage to cartilage or ligaments.
Recent advancements have taken arthroscopy further by allowing
the surgeon to proceed with repairs to the joint, eliminating
the need for more extensive "open" surgery later
on.
One such repair that's in great demand today is anterior
cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. This procedure,
in which SportONE physicians specialize, involves replacing
a torn knee ligament with strong healthy tissue. At
SportONE, the process is done entirely by arthroscopic
surgery on an outpatient basis for greater patient comfort,
quicker recovery time and less expense.

The Road to Recovery
Whether or not your injury requires surgery, there's a good
chance you'll be involved in an individualized rehabilitation
program through SportONE. Depending on your needs, this
may involve flexibility and strengthening exercises,
hands-on treatment to improve soft tissue mobility,
or posture and body mechanics training. In addition,
we offer nutritional evaluations, orthotic placement,
biomedical analysis and rehabilitation seminars.
At SportONE, our experience as physicians and trainers
for high school, college and professional sports teams
is the most extensive in the area. And you can be certain
that we'll use that experience to find just the right
combination of treatment and rehabilitation for you.
